Bedrooms have become an essential part in any home when modern living introduced us to have our own safe haven. Apart from sleeping, this is where we do an outpouring of our emotions and thoughts. Therefore, bedrooms must have an atmosphere that is contributory to achieving this purpose.
Initially, you need to review your prerequisites. Aside from having an area to sleep, what are the other activities that you plan to do in your bedroom? You probably want to have a sitting area where you can read, write, or work.
Would you prefer to have a small fridge? Do you want to have a bedroom with an en-suite toilet and bath? Do you prefer to have a walk-in closet or just the usual cabinets?
You must also have adequate lighting and good aeration so that fresh air can circulate within your private sanctuary.
When you are finish examining your prerequisites, it would be easy to choose the furniture that you need to maximize your available space.

Selecting furniture for your bedroom

Your furniture must be proportionate to the size of your bedroom. They must not be too small or too big. You would be able to do obtain this perfectly by drawing a sketch of your sanctuary and write down the furniture that you want to have. This will give you a clear idea if they fit well in the room. However, choose the important ones to avoid clutter. This normally consists of a bed, a nightstand, a dresser, a chest, a wardrobe, a chair and a writing table. Choose furniture pieces that serve dual purposes. You also need to ensure that they complement each other in color, style and quality.

For your bed, choose something that will provide you comfort in your sleep and blends with your bedroom theme. A bed that has underneath drawers can help you to save on space particularly if you have a small area. A sofa bed will also be an ideal choice for a small room.

To maximize your space, opt to have wall-type shelves for more storage or built-in closets. Window-seats will also free up some space in your bedroom. You can also have cabinets to store other items.

Selecting colors for your bedroom

To build a restful and soothing ambiance, choose light or subdued colors for your walls. Colors that are perfect for a bedroom are blues, creams, light green and other pastel hues. The use of bold and daring colors is not recommended, as they do not induce a restful atmosphere. You can use them though if they were your preference.

To make a bit of difference, make use of painting techniques such as faux, sponging and ragging painting for your ceiling. You can also have it painted in a lighter shade than your walls. This will foster balance especially if your ceiling is high. You can also choose to have beams, crown molding or papering for your ceiling.

Lights for your bedroom

To complete the theme of your room, make use of natural light. Artificial lights can be used by planning it carefully. Layered illumination in your sanctuary is a good option. Use a central ambient illumination that can be mounted on the ceiling. Use task lighting for your dresser, closets and desk. Have a dimmer switch so you can regulate your lights.

On word of advice, to keep your bedroom restful and tranquil, do not include any gadgets or equipment. A book shelf and some pieces of artwork are better choices though.
